Alternate “Why They Cried” cover week: The Badger Cover

Badgercover

So after Brian presented The Bear Cover,  I went digging around in the NYPL's archives and found this,  "Un déterrage de blaireau," which is (more or less) French for, "harassing the shit out of a badger until it it is dead." My first published short story, which will appear in Why They Cried, is called "The Adventures of Bad Badger," which is why I was searching for badgers.

I still like this cover, with its depiction of ridiculous human barbarism and cruelty. That works for me. And this was not the only representation of "badger digging" to be found in the NYPL's digital vault, by the way. Evidently this is what the British and French did before soccer.

Tomorrow (or maybe Friday): My interview with Why They Cried (final) cover designer David Gee.

Before ECW decided to put David Gee on the project, Brian Joseph Davis -- who (along with Emily Schultz) runs Joyland and its imprint -- whipped up this cover for Why They Cried using an image from the New York Public Library's Digital Gallery. I actually still like it, with its depiction of ill-advised human enterprise ending in folly and cowardice. That works for me.

This was always intended as a temp cover, however, and Brian has asked me to tell you that, "In publishing, because of its long lead time, temp covers made for zero bucks, with help from public domain images, is a common stage. Then real designers are brought in."
